Dear Diary,

Mother and I spent the day at the U. S. O. headquarters in the Baker Hotel again today. I just happened to think what I’d do if every well-known solder stationed in Texas came strolling into that place. I imagine I’d faint, since a few of those men are Bill Holden, Burgess Merideth, Buddy Rogers, Lew Ayres, and Jackie Coogan. There may be more that I don’t know about. Only one thing could give me a bigger thrill – for Bob Hope to come in some day to entertain the soldiers. But that is merely a wild area, and I dream entirely too much.

Dear Diary,

We left Kingman at seven o’clock this morning. Nothing much happened today except that we passed by the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest again. That’s not new any more, but it’s still a thrill.

I heard some quiz program this morning, but I don’t know much about it. They asked the real name of the Golden Boy. The answer is William Holden, but someone sent in Bob Hope’s name! Imagine! “Golden Boy” Hope.

Dear Diary,

From Hedda Hopper’s column today: “Bob Hope and Bill Holden are priming turtles for the national turtle race in Dallas on September first. Bob’s ‘Mabel’ was a favorite last year.”

What an event for a city to be famous for! A turtle race! It does a lot of good though, so why not. If it doesn’t cost too much, I think I’ll enter a turtle, and of course, I’ll call it “Bob.”
